How to play AI Dungeons & Dragons
in your browser
TalesTalesTales is a free text-based D&D game where an AI takes the role of the Dungeon Master. Roll real dice, recruit NPCs, manage HP and spell slots. Here's how to start your first saga in five steps.
step-by-step
- 1
- 2
Forge a hero
Pick race & class, roll D&D 5e stats (4d6-drop-lowest), then write a one-line backstory. Your hero is one of one.
- 3
- 4
Take your first turn
Type what you do. Claude, GPT-5 or Gemini narrates the outcome, rolls enemy dice openly, tracks HP and offers branching choices.
- 5
Keep playing
Save your saga. Recruit companions. Level up. Publish your custom world for other players to fork.
what makes it real D&D
Real D&D 5e dice
Every check, save, and damage roll uses the actual mechanics — d20s, advantage, criticals.
HP & combat tracker
On-screen initiative, enemy HP bars, status effects. NPCs roll openly so you see every nat-20 land.
Memory Codex
Every turn, NPC, and event is logged. A Saga Bible keeps the AI consistent across 100+ turn campaigns.
Living world map
Visited places, NPC positions and a regenerating atlas image grow as you discover new lands.
AI scene art
Generated illustrations every few turns keep the visual style of your saga locked in.
Mature mode (optional)
Toggle adult themes on per-saga for grittier tone. Strict 18+ gate, off by default.
frequently asked
- Is TalesTalesTales really free?
- Yes — 15 turns per day on the free tier forever, no card required. Paid tiers (Apprentice / Mage / Archmage) unlock more daily turns, premium narrators, and longer scenes.
- Which AI narrator is best?
- Claude Sonnet 4.5 (default) is the strongest at long-form continuity and D&D mechanics. GPT-5 is more cinematic, Gemini 2.5 Pro is fastest. Uncensored OpenRouter narrators are available for adult roleplay.
- Do I need to know D&D to play?
- No. The AI explains every roll, manages your sheet, and offers choices each turn. If you can read English, you can play.
- Can I bring a homebrew world?
- Yes. On the campaign-creation page, describe your setting in plain English — the AI handles canon, tone and creatures. You can also publish it to the community library.
- What happens if I die?
- Permadeath is opt-in. By default, falling to 0 HP triggers death saves D&D-style; three failures and the saga ends. Many players consider that the highest compliment a story can pay them.
That's everything. The candles are lit. The dice are ready.
